Software Development Engineer - Developer Tools at Amazon (Seattle)

Do you want to help create, from scratch, the highly scalable, multi-region service and web app that forms the central nervous system of Amazon and AWS? Are you interested in building fast, five-nines REST web services backed by the latest technologies available on AWS (some of which you haven't seen before)? Does building a responsive, beautiful single-page JS web app that is used by tens of thousands of people a day sound like a challenge you want to take on?

The SWIM team (Service and Website Issue Management) is looking for creative software engineers that will help us solve these and other problems together. We are a small team and we need serious developers who excel in a fast-paced and often ambiguous environment where we are learning while designing and developing completely new tools in a huge internal (and potentially external) problem space.

If you join our team, you will:
  • Use your creativity and problem solving skills to design/develop new tools which help every single person, device, service and website in all of Amazon.
  • Work with and learn many different technologies - Java, Ruby/Rails, jQuery/Backbone.js/Bootstrap, AWS services like Simple Workflow and DynamoDB, along with other advanced internal Amazon/AWS technologies.
  • Deeply own the entire lifecycle our products, from the roadmap to the design/architecture to implementation and continuous iterative development and deployment.
  • Interface closely with internal and external customers to drive new products, new features and new ways forward in the issue management space across the company (and possibly outside of it as well).

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Previously held a Top Secret or similar clearance and is eligible, willing and able to immediately begin obtaining a TS/SCI clearance
  • Equivalent experience to a Bachelor's degree based on 3 years of work experience for every 1 year of education
  • 2+ years professional experience in software development
  • 1+ year experiance with at least, one modern programming language such as C, C++, Java, or Perl
This position requires the applicant selected to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) eligibility and access. A US Government administered polygraph examination will be required. TS/SCI eligibility is not required to start; however, the applicant selected will be subject to a Single-Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified national security information. Applicants with a current SSBI, SBPR, or PPR, may be eligible for crossover in accordance with ICPG 704.4.

  • Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design
  • Computer Science fundamentals in data structures
  • Computer Science fundamentals in algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
  • Experience with highly scalable, multi-region services
  • Knowledge of single-page Javascript application development
  • Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Ability to take a project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project
  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs.
