DEPARTMENT
The Society of Grownups is a Masters Program for Adulthood. It’s a venue where you can learn all sorts of things: how to handle your finances, appreciate wine, deal with work issues, buy a home, save for retirement, or start a business. Most importantly, though, it teaches you how to keep your soul and sense of adventure along the way.
We’re opening our physical space this fall, where we’ll host classes, offer financial advice, provide a coffee bar and lots more. Once our doors open, we’ll also be doing something many companies have tried and none have done well: giving financial advice online. The Society of Grownups website will be a portal into your financial future and a resource for your social present-day.
We’re a small team and we’re going to move fast. Our web applications will connect our members’ experiences within the Society venue to our next-generation financial planning backend. We think we can make a better mousetrap, and we’re looking for engineers who believe in our vision and have the technical aptitude to get us there.
Job Summary:
The Society of Grownups is creating web-based software to provide financial advice to our members. To do that, we need an experienced application developer with a background in finance or a related field to help us achieve our vision to deliver comprehensive financial advice on the web. As a Society of Grownups developer you will be working with our small engineering team to maintain the Society’s web applications, and as our financial specialist, you will be responsible for enhancing our Ruby on Rails financial planning back-end service. You get the nuances of personal finance, and can work with an interface designer to translate those complexities into effective software.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Strong experience developing web-based applications and services in a production environment
- Background in finance, economics, mathematics or a related field
- Experience developing applications using Ruby on Rails
- JavaScript / Node.js experience a plus If you join the Society of Grownups development team, you will attend three JavaScript application development classes at Bocoup, the Open Web company.

COMPENSATION:
We pay competitive base salaries and we reward performance. Our salary structure is commensurate with experience. In addition, you will be eligible to participate in our comprehensive benefits program including medical insurance and 401(K).
