We’re looking for a systems-focused engineer who wants to build infrastructure to support the next generation of news delivery platforms for public radio.

As a Systems Engineer at KPCC, you’ll join a small team of developers and designers building durable platforms for publishing journalism, and shipping editorial (http://projects.scpr.org/firetracker) products (http://audiovision.scpr.org) that bring clarity and insight to the issues that affect Southern California. You'll be given responsibility over KPCC's growing digital infrastructure, working alongside the product team to architect and deploy systems that scale to meet the demands of our growing audience and perform at the speed of news.

Our applications perform a diverse set of tasks: a Node.js app (https://github.com/StreamMachine/StreamMachine) powers our live stream, our publishing platforms (https://github.com/SCPR/outpost) and websites are built on Rails/MySQL/Redis, we manage our own audio content and ad delivery, and we have a robust API (https://github.com/SCPR/api-docs/tree/master/KPCC/v3) that supports our native apps and a variety of digital editorial storytelling tools.

We run our own servers, using VMWare as our hypervisor, Chef for configuration management, and New Relic for monitoring. We are strong believers in writing tests, and use Circle CI for continuous integration.

How we work

At KPCC, engineers work alongside designers as part of a unified product team. Everyone on the team exerts ownership over the direction of our products, and is given the chance to work on the projects that will move KPCC forward. All of our code is hosted on Github (https://github.com/SCPR), and we make a lot of our projects public.

We make use of Slack and Hubot to stay connected to each other, our code and our systems. We use Pivotal Tracker to manage our work, and we strive to build iteratively and ship often without being dogmatic about agile. We’re a hardworking team who sets ambitious goals, but we all believe in having a life outside of work.

Why KPCC

At KPCC, we’re trying to redefine how public service journalism can serve a diverse metropolis. KPCC is part of Southern California Public Radio, a member-supported public media organization. We reach more than 700,000 listeners every week, and over 1 million people with our digital products. We have the second-largest public radio audience in the nation who loves us and trusts us every day for their news. We broadcast lots of award-winning local coverage and programs, as well as the best NPR content.

You’ll come in every day and work on meaningful challenges with a crew of smart, friendly, creative people. You’ll get to work in a small, fast-moving team that has a big impact on the future of public media. You’ll come to work at the Mohn Broadcast Center, our beautiful office in the heart of sunny Pasadena. We offer competitive benefits and salary, a true live/work balance, and support a diverse and inclusive work environment.
