Designer/ Front-End Web Developer
We are hiring front-end Javascript developer and UI Designer to join Dr. Mike Cherry’s group in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University.
We build and maintain cutting edge web portals for the scientific community, including SGD, the Saccharomyces Genome Database (http://www.yeastgenome.org) and the ENCODE Data Coordination Center and Portal (http://www.encodeproject.org/ENCODE).
Are you a Javascript wizard? If you are looking to push the envelope in web-graphic user interfaces and in visualization of cutting-edge biological data, then we need your expertise. If you have innovative designs and new approaches for collation, summarization, and light-bulb-inducing effects from mountains of raw data, then we have the position you are looking for.
The Front-End/UI Developer will be the lead engineer and driving force behind the next generation of scientific web portals and interfaces for our existing projects as well as future developments in genomics and biology.
Ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate experience with bleeding edge technological advances in design, code, packages and paradigms. Candidates must be able to lead the design of the front-end systems while still understanding and collaborating with biologists and bioinformatics professionals who have a deep understanding for the content. Finally, the front-end developer must be able to integrate seamlessly with our backend engineering, management, and data wrangling team.
Previous experience working in an academic environment is a plus. The successful candidate will work at the Stanford University in Palo Alto California. Compliance with all institutional and governmental health and safety regulations and policies is required.
Qualifications:
• Four-your college degree in Computer Science, Design, Human-Computer Interfaces or a related field or demonstrated equivalent experience and at least three years experience.
• The candidate must have proven ability in design and implementation of responsive and dynamic web interfaces.
• Substantial expertise in modern Javascript packaging and frameworks, for example: BackboneJS, AngularJS, RequireJS and/or NodeJS.
• Expert javascript programmer, with a solid foundation in object oriented programming.
• Substantial experience with JSON, HTML5, CSS/SASS, DOM manipulation, and asynchronous techniques.
• Experience with server-side technologies including relational databases (Oracle, Mysql or Postgres), RESTful services and MVC design patterns.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience with modern source code version control systems is a must.
Desired:
• Five years related work experience.
• Experience with D3, Canvas, SVG, Flash, or other graphics and animation (2D or 3D) libraries or languages.
• Experience with Git or distributed version control.
• Experience with automated testing frameworks (Selenium, etc.)
• Previous work within a distributed OSS or team environment is important.
• Working knowledge of python.
• Experience with web performance and analytics.
• Working knowledge of human-computer interactions and UI design principles.
• Experience with Bioinformatics, Computational or Systems Biology, or Biostatistics data is a significant plus.
