No relocation necessary. This is a flexible, permanent, remote independent contractor job with a full-time workload.

AdBlock is the #1 most installed browser extension for Google Chrome and for Safari, with over 20 million users all over the world. Since its inception, AdBlock has been entirely user-supported. As a new dad, Michael Gundlach, the creator of AdBlock (AKA "the man who’s blocked 100 billion ads"), is eager to permanently step back from his role as the maintainer of getadblock.com and AdBlock, and see his creation continue to thrive and expand under other people, while retaining ownership and remaining available in a consulting role.

The Job

As AdBlock's new Web Developer, you'll be the foremost person in charge of maintaining the getadblock.com website and related infrastructure for the most popular extension in the Chrome Web Store and the Safari Extension Gallery. You'll also be part of a small team charged with expanding AdBlock as both a suite of web services and as a "brand"... but only in the most playful sense! This is the team that brought you CatBlock, after all :)

You'll initially speak with Gabriel Cubbage, who manages the AdBlock team, then meet with Michael for the technical side of the application process. Aside from Gabriel and Michael, the current AdBlock team consists of part-time developers, translators, and volunteers working in different places around the world.

The Web Dev, along with Gabriel and the new AdBlock Extension Developer, will round out the "core team" responsible for growing and improving AdBlock in 2014 and beyond.

Responsibilities

Primary person responsible for maintaining and enhancing the technical side of AdBlock's presence online, including getadblock.com, and collaborating with other AdBlock team members, to organize the workload. The public website is currently just a few static pages of HTML and JavaScript, on a server that syncs with a GitHub repo. Initially, the Web Dev will help improve our web content deployment approach, and expand and partially re-write the existing site code.

We'll soon launch enhancements to the website to complement the AdBlock extension as a service, along with conversion optimization tools, and improved user support flows.

  • Maintain and improve the getadblock.com website by writing clean, well-documented code

  • Monitor and configure the getadblock.com web server

  • With the help of the rest of AdBlock team: Troubleshoot web server and website issues. Fix bugs. Ensure cross-platform/browser compatibility

  • Develop new web-based tools and applications to support AdBlock's continued growth as an extension, and as a family of services

  • Monitor and run A/B tests on getadblock.com/installed, and optimize accordingly

  • Work closely with Gabriel and the new AdBlock Extension Developer to develop new site features and content, and invent new A/B tests to raise donation revenue and improve conversions

  • Report to Gabriel Cubbage and collaborate with the AdBlock support/translation team through our project management, version control, and support systems

Other Details

  • Pay: $70k - $90k per year, depending on experience

  • This is a long-term, contract-based position, i.e. not temporary, but no W2 either

  • Full-time workload

  • Flexible hours

  • No relocation necessary
